I've bought an adjustable stem before (different brand), it was bulky, heavy and creaked a lot. This one has none of those issues. The angle adjustment stays firm with no slop, the quill part is pretty deep alowing for a comfortable height. I purchased this quill for my beach cruiser as the stock one had stripped. No surprise as it was only holding the handlebars with two bolts. Turns out I needed a 1 1/8" quill instead, so I had to purchase an alternative. While awaiting replacement, I installed this quill with a aluminum can shim and the lower piece from the stock quill. Other than the slight gap by the frame due to incorrect size, this quill performed great. The adjustment worked well, there was no question of it moving on you. The clamping force on the handlebars is unmatched with the 4-bolt design. There was no play at all with this quill. It was very sturdy and seems like it would hold up well to bmx style bike type of abuse. After installing the replacement quill of the correct size I longed for how this quill had no play (unwanted movement). The part seems very well built. Unfortunately, it does not fit. I measured my gooseneck and it was 1" so that is what I ordered. What the manufacturer and the website fails to mention, is the ACTUAL dimension of the part. See, Steering stems and goosenecks go by the nominal size of the steering tube (the part that these fit into-headset). Turns out I can't really measure that part very easily. Long story short, a gooseneck marked for 1" is actually around 7/8" in diameter and one marketed as 1 1/8" is actually around 1" in diameter. The manufacturer and the seller should notate this in the advertisements and descriptions of the parts.Steve |
