Progold Chain Gauge Reviews
5 of 5 people found the following review helpful good idea, but too fragile, Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Progold Chain Gauge (Sports) It seemed to work the first few times I tried it. Then after being shuffled aroung my tool box for a while, it would tell me that a brand new chain was almost no good. I tried to tweek it back, and I think I got it close to where it was. Keep it in the original box it came in to protect it! 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful Not a very useful tool, This review is from: Progold Chain Gauge (Sports) Even if you have a new cassette and new chainrings, being able to measure chain wear in .003" increments; there are 10 scale divisions and its easy to interpolate to 1/2 division, so 20 increments over 1/16 max stretch, doesn't make a lot of sense. Yes, if you have a new drive train, changing the chain at 1/16" 'stretch' makes sense. But what if you are on your 4th, 5th or 6th chain. You know that the cassette and rings are worn but maybe still good enough to use, so do you want to change the chain at 1/16" stretch. I sometimes work on refurbishing old bikes for a charity and a 5 speed chain only stretched by 1/16 is practically new. I certainly need to compare chains with up to 1/8" stretch so this tool is useless to me. Whoever designed this tool did a great job with the design, because the... (then you end up buying a new cassette and chainrings, making you wonder if you shouldn't just buy a whole new bike instead when you see the cost...)This is a chain gauge, it's easy to use, and doesn't take up a lot of space in your toolbox. Also, it shows you how much your chain has worn, not just a go/no go reading, so you'll know how often to check it in the future. Not much more to say about it than that! |
